How to avoid piracy cards by downloading with a VPN
In the month of May, customers of the Euskaltel operator began to receive letters in which they were claimed money for having downloaded the Dallas Buyers Club movie through the BitTorrent network. Now, users of the Movistar operator in different provinces of Spain, are also receiving these letters for hacking movies and even chapters of different series. Today in RedesZone we will explain how we can hide our public IP address by downloading by Torrent, using VPN services.
The first thing we have to know is that the public IP address is located directly from those who download the movie or series , through the public tracker of torrents. Although a public IP address does not identify a specific user, these letters are received directly by the owner of the Internet connection to which that public IP address belongs, regardless of whether “someone” has connected to our Wi-Fi network and You have downloaded the material.
If you want to hide your public IP address in the BitTorrent network, to download safely and that these types of letters do not reach you, you must use VPN services that do not save any type of registration . How does a VPN service work for downloading by BitTorrent?
VPN services allow us to access the Internet using the public IP address of the VPN server where we are connecting. The client (we) will connect to said server using a VPN service program, or if we configure the VPN client on our router and proceed to configure it so that all traffic passes through said VPN tunnel.
The most normal when we use a VPN service, is to make all the traffic pass through that server, although the programs of some services allow us to only certain applications. The connection between us and the VPN server is fully encrypted and authenticated, so if someone external captures all traffic, they will not be able to “read it” because it is fully encrypted point to point using symmetric encryption algorithms such as AES among others.
In this way, when we connect to the VPN server from our computer, all incoming and outgoing traffic will pass through said VPN tunnel to the server, and once it is on that server, it will go to the Internet. Thanks to this technology, we can download BitTorrent very easily using a public IP address that will not identify our Internet connection, in fact, it will directly identify this VPN service.
We currently have a large number of VPN services, but we must look specifically at the services that provide us with these features:
Internet security disconnection : in case the VPN tunnel goes down, the VPN program itself interrupts any Internet connection, so that we do not download anything without going through that VPN server.
Split tunneling : if we only want to download BitTorrent using VPN, but we want to surf the Internet with our real connection, this option will allow us to do so. In this way, Torrent traffic will go through the VPN, and the rest of the traffic will go through the actual connection.
Many servers in different countries : it is recommended that we have at our disposal several VPN servers, and in different countries, to choose which is the best server for our Internet connection.
Speed and no bandwidth limit : if we are going to download by BitTorrent, it is essential that the bandwidth provided by the VPN is high, otherwise, the downloads will be very slow. The same goes for a possible limit of GB downloaded, it is essential to have no limitations.
